Veolia's Advanced DryAsh™ Solution Helps Reclaim Ash Lagoon Capacity
THE CHALLENGE
Wet fly ash lagoons at coal-fired power plants, particularly in the eastern United States, have been fighting capacity issues for several years. When a major safety incident occurred in which an ash lagoon overextended its capacity, the federal government was prompted to take regulatory action related to fly ash management. Recognizing a void in the power industry for permanent solutions for fly ash management, Veolia Environmental Services stepped up to the challenge and developed its DryAsh™ services.
DryAsh™ Powered by Veolia provides coal-fired power plants with a solution for effectively arresting the large volumes of wet fly ash pouring into ash lagoons across the country. It also mitigates the risks associated with ash lagoons nearing capacity, from both a cost and safety perspective. The first DryAsh™ operation began at a major coal-fired power plant in southern Ohio in April 2010, and more than two years later, DryAsh™ continues to meet this challenge head-on.
THE SOLUTION
Veolia’s DryAsh™ solution, a high-capacity, customized separations technology, was installed at the customer's site to aid the plant in reclaiming ash lagoon capacity. The customer's specific objectives for the systematically-engineered piping, presses and separations technology of DryAsh™ included:
- Reduce the volume of the ash lagoon to regain capacity.
- Eliminate the ‘overflow potential’ for the ash lagoon.
- Meet geotechnical moisture specifications for high density landfill stacking of material.
- Meet EPA discharge requirements throughout the entire process.
THE RESULTS
During the first two years of operations for this customer, Veolia's DryAsh™ technology has taken more than 170,000 cubic yards/year of wet fly ash from the plant's 60-acre ash lagoon and converted it to DryAsh™ in accordance with the customer's objectives and in compliance with all regulation. According to Bart Haynes, Director of Veolia's DryAsh™ Group, “Veolia has set the industry standard, in an efficient and economic manner, in providing a solution to a growing problem confronting every ash lagoon in the U.S.”
