Compliance
Healthcare facilities that can be classified as Large Quantity Generator (LQG), based on the amount of waste they generate in one month, fall under the regulations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), as well as state regulations.
Approximately five percent of commonly used pharmaceuticals are defined as hazardous waste under RCRA, including several chemotherapeutic agents, epinephrine and warfarin. Best practices and the “precautionary principle” — an approach to environmental practices that requires organizations to bear the burden of proving that an activity does not have adverse environmental consequences — dictate that other equally hazardous drugs be managed as though they were subject to regulation under RCRA. These include:
- Newer chemotherapy drugs
- Endocrine disruptors
- Drugs meeting National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) hazardous drug criteria
Veolia has the expertise to help healthcare providers navigate state and federal regulations. We can help you with all of the aspects of your operations that impact your regulatory compliance — from waste management and disposal to training your staff and tracking compliance certificates.
